We were extremely busy during Fairtrade Fortnight. This was a very important occasion for the school as it highlighted the plight of farmers and growers in less developed countries. Several projects on Global warming, sustainable development and a Trócaire project on Honduras were completed. Raffle tickets were sold continuously over the fortnight and a hamper containing Fairtrade produce was the prize. Pupils were encouraged to bring in chocolate containing the Fairtrade logo as a treat. The money raised will be sent to Trócaire.

We had our Day of Action on Friday the 10th of March. We had a visit from Louth County Council representative inspecting our green schools team to determine if we had been following the seven steps of our current green flag Global Citizenship – litter and waste. Our application was sent off the following week and we are expecting An Taisce to process this.

May we take this opportunity to thank all the pupils and parents for their cooperation and support. Regards, The Green Schools Committee.

Our baking lessons are going really well. We love learning how to bake new things every week. Last week we made pizza and this week we made Mary Berry’s Flapjacks with Mrs McLeod. They are a yummy healthy treat. If you want to try the flapjacks here’s what to do:

Melt 225g of margarine with 225g of Demerara sugar and 75g of golden syrup. Add 275g of porridge oats and the zest of a lemon. Press the mixture into two 8inch round tins lined with baking parchment and bake for 30 minutes at 160 degrees celsius until golden brown. Then enjoy with a glass of milk or a cup of tea!

Spring has sprung….

We marked the first day of Spring (Celtic Spring) by celebrating Saint Brigid’s Day in the church with Fr. Murtagh. Check out our Saint Brigid’s crosses we made during art!

It has been a relatively mild winter and as a result, the daffodils and crocus bulbs have emerged from the ground quite early this year. The yellow crocus were planted to remind us annually of Holocaust Memorial Day (29th January), which has just passed.

The Green Schools have been quite busy preparing the garden area and planting a large assortment of bulbs which were given to us by Woodies DIY in Dundalk – a big thank you to them. Derek from Fourth Class has been coordinating the bulb planting for us.

Several projects associated with our current green flag as well individual  projects have been completed by the senior classes in the school.

Regards, The Green Schools Committee

Sixth Class held a Jumble Sale on the 2nd of December. It was a great success! A total €1219.54 was raised. A donation of €500 was given to Saint Vincent De Paul which was presented at the Christmas Carol Service. Unsold items were also given to Saint Vincent De Paul. Sixth Class would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sent in items and to everyone who came. Thank you!

We are all busy researching, the life cycle of a plastic bottle, water cycle, recycling in different countries, fair-trade issues, equality in trade amongst other countries as well as environmental issues that involve us as global citizens.

All international children within the school were invited to write about their countries and some very interesting facts and figures were revealed about their culture, economy and environmental issues that would otherwise have been unknown to us in the school. Yet again we need to be reminded that we are global citizens and are affected by issues of a global nature as well as locally.

Can we take this opportunity to remind parents and pupils to reduce, reuse and recycle where possible this Christmas season. The recycling centres in Drogheda and Dundalk are only too happy to take your batteries and Christmas trees.

Could we consider buying  fair-trade products from the supermarket to support less developed countries – more of the money goes back to the producer.

Have a Greener Christmas, The Green Schools Committee.

We held our annual Christmas Carol Service in the church on Tuesday the 20th of December. All the children did a wonderful job reading, saying prayers, singing carols and performing. We would like to thank everyone for attending. A lovely morning was had by all!

Image result for baking clip artAt the start of November we moved seats and changed our tables around in First Class. We are sitting in groups now and we think it’s much better this way. We have a new teacher called Ms. Maguire. She is very good at teaching us and is very kind. We have to make sure our bird feeder is topped up to keep the birds fed, especially in this cold and frosty weather.

Mrs. McLeod, Erin’s Mammy is coming in on Wednesdays to help us bake. We are very excited to get some baking lessons. In P.E. we are practicing our gymnastics. There is one week left in November. We are on the countdown to Christmas!

Image result for football clip artWe are still making lovely cakes and buns every Wednesday in Fifth class. We are preparing for our Christmas Carol Service and decorating inside and outside the class. We have enjoyed three weeks of training with the GAA. We are looking forward to Christmas and to Santa coming!

All the trees are looking bare and native trees and shrubs like Hawthorn and Rowan are yielding up their fruit to the local bird population.

We have filled the bird feeders with nuts and seeds to supplement their diet – a much appreciated food source in the recent cold snap.

Each class has been assigned a research project associated with Global Citizenship Flag. Pupils or pupil’s parents that have originated in a different country to Ireland have been encouraged to write about their countries. This is very important as it informs everyone in the school community of where their classmates are from as well as the Global nature of the community we live in.

jumble-sale5Jumble Sale

Sixth Class organised a Jumble Sale in the school hall on Friday the 2nd of December. Children from all classes brought in unwanted items from home over the past two weeks. By Friday the hall was bursting with things to sell! The Jumble Sale was a huge success, raising a significant amount of money for Saint Vincent De Paul at Christmas time. We would like to thank Sixth Class and their teacher Ms Dromgoole for all the hard work and effort that they put into organising and running the Jumble Sale. Well done!

First Class have been very busy this month! In October we have been eating very healthy lunches. Every day we are trying to include a fruit and a vegetable in our lunch boxes. Everyone is making a brilliant effort. Lots of birds are coming to our class bird feeder. They are eating the nuts and seeds very quickly. We are busy keeping it topped up!

We have set up a little holy altar for Mary in the class. We light the candles and say a decade of the rosary every morning with our new rosary beads. October has flown by and we are looking forward to dressing up for Halloween. We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable week off school!

Fifth Class are working very hard making Halloween Masks . We have learned how to do long division and are very good at it, we are also getting very good at looking up for new words in the dictionary and putting them into sentences. We are reading a very good book called ‘The Moon Bear’.  We were trying to eat healthy food this October and we have we have succeeded. On Friday the 28th of October, we are doing a show in the class called Fifth Class has got talent. We also enjoyed taking part in our Sponsored Walk at the beginning of October!

sportsGarda Sports Day

Sixth Class attended the Garda Sports Day at The O’ Raghailligh’s football grounds in Drogheda two weeks ago. Vicky came 3rd in the 200 metres and Luke came 3rd in the boys penalty shootout. Everyone had a great day. Well done to everyone that took part!

fruitHealthy Eating during the month of October

There was a focus on healthy in Scoil Bhríde during the month of October. All the classes made an extra effort to bring fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks to school. Some classes baked healthy recipes and made lovely healthy soups! Yum! Ms Moran held a Healthy Eating Poster Competition and the posters were displayed in the school hall. All children made an excellent effort. The winners of the poster competition received certificates and special prizes at assembly. Please see the School News Section of the website for the winners of the competition!

The children have been busy planting bulbs around the school. Everything on the school grounds is slowing down and going into hibernation. We will be installing the bird feeders again for the winter months.

We have conducted a nationality survey among our pupils as well as a global food survey. Some very interesting results came to light when considering air miles, carbon footprint and eating seasonal food. Furthermore, the issue of Fairtrade and how recycling both in Ireland and in other less developed countries will be the focus of many projects after the mid-term break.

Our September News

In First Class we had a very busy September. We are getting used to staying in school until 3 o’clock and playing in the big yard at break. We have different homework this year and new games to learn. Our favourite game so far is Tables Champ. On Fridays we have Golden Time and every morning we begin our day with a decade of the Rosary. We love being back at school and playing with our friends.

Fifth Class are working very hard. They are enjoying baking every Wednesday. Fifth Class also performed a rap based on cyber-bullying at assembly last Friday.Everyone had great fun taking part!

Green Schools News

Welcome back everyone from your summer break. The focus on this Green Flag is a revision of our litter and waste. Previously, our focus was on managing our litter and waste in a local setting but now a greater emphasis is on how we see ourselves on a global scale. How do other countries recycle and manage their waste? Where does our waste go? How do we as responsible Global Citizens enable less developed countries to grow? Do we buy Fair Trade products instead of exploit their resources and products?

We will be working on the above through a series of projects and linked curriculum work throughout the school.

Kind regards, The Green Schools Committee
